TOLWORTH SCHOOL
To accommodate a ‘bulge year’ in pupil numbers, Tolworth School required a two-storey new teaching block.
Shockledge were appointed by the Royal Borough of Kingston Upon Thames as Structural and Civil Engineers to assist the team in delivering the project from concept to completion.
A key feature of the design was for the building to form part of an initial phase in an extensive remodelling of the school. The new building was to be the starting piece in a consecutive arrangement of proposed adjoining blocks. Therefore, a key consideration for the project was the future provision for loading and building logistics with forthcoming steel connections designed into the structure to prevent interruption at a later date.
Another major factor for the project was the continued use of the main school during the construction period and the need to minimise any disruption. Therefore, the construction sequence and site logistics became a primary consideration for the design. This resulted in the majority of the structure being developed using an off-site system.
